I was thinking a couple of days ago to make a post about food here, as everyone asks me about the food here. I can start saying that this was one of the things which I didn’t researched, as everyone I talked to and was here was fascinated about the food. So, I imagined it would just be great and not even bother thinking about it. In the end, how different can it be? It’s an island, so it has to be very healthy, a lot of fruits and fishes and that is it. Even thought of becoming a vegetarian here. Well, not a chance.
When I first arrived I went to a mamak, a local Indian place with the cheapest food you will find here. I was planning to wait for a week or so until I try the local food, but my flat mates decided to go all the way in from the first night. Ok then, let’s do this. I went there, sat at the table, this Indian guy with a shitty English comes and smiles widely, with his white teeth, asking.. can take order? I was looking at my flatmates.,…aaa..what do I order? so I went safe, get some rice with chicken curry and mint sauce. Not spicy they said, but I was terrified at the combo…mint sauce and chicken curry.. sure… not spicy at all. Yes to spicy, but definitely yes to the taste.:) After that, exploration has began. I managed to find my favorite foods here, tried malay food in a fancy restaurant and found a very cool place where they have malay food, very close to my work place and very cheap.
So, to make a better picture of the types of food and the places you can eat them, the food looks like these.
This is western restaurants food, where you pay like $10 for the meal. And do not judge on the color of the juice, it is crazy. It’s a combo of… weird stuff with good taste. :) It has become one of my favorites..a pink juice.

The best things about Malay food: they have pineapple in their food, you find Soy in almost anything and they cook it very nice, fresh fruits at $0,30 at every corner, and my favorite food ever tried from night market- carrot cake( last pic)

Traditional Chinese meal. Hot plate they call it, noodles with chicken meat and spicy. very good and very hot!!
